What is a Multiage Classroom?
A multiage classroom is a unique setting in which children are grouped in a larger age range than the traditional one year placement. In the 3rd and 4th grade multiage classrooms we will have students ranging over two age groups. Students entering 3rd grade will spend two years in their multiage classroom with the same teacher before moving on to 5th grade. Students who spend a year or more in a multiage setting not only benefit academically, but will have stronger leadership and problem solving abilities. The unique opportunity to spend two years with a student gives teachers the ability to better know your child's strengths and weaknesses and provide them a better education using this knowledge.
A multiage setting allows us to meet the student with what they are ready for, not what the class is ready for. In the same regard, students who have mastered skills can be pushed ahead and introduced to advanced concepts. We are very excited about the opportunity to provide your student with this unique educational setting and look forward to sharing their successes with you!
Congratulations! You are now an Islander!
One of the most important things to remember in a multiage classroom is that we are all a part of the same team. Even though the students are at different ages and abilities, we are more focused on building a community to reach the needs of our students rather than focusing on a grade level. Therefore, your amazing team of teachers came up with a fun way for our team to stand out! Students in grades 3 and 4 in the state of Michigan are required to learn a great deal about Michigan's geography as well as its history. So we tied this idea into giving each of our classrooms a theme and naming them after popular islands in Michigan! Students will be traveling between the four classrooms on a daily basis between activities and lessons, and will have a chance to go on an island adventure daily! Our classrooms are named after Mackinac Island, Drummond Island, Beaver Island and Isle Royale.
